To all our veterans
This blog, and the freedoms that allow it to exist, are here because of you.
Were it not for you, and the sacrifices you've made for us through the generations, we would not be allowed to say the things that get said in the Blogosphere every day. They'd have to be run through a government filter for approval; those expressions of thought that didn't pass muster...well, God help those who made them. Because of you, that doesn't happen today.
Because of you, we're free to worship God as we choose, or not. (Or Cthulu, or Maitreya, or chakras/crystals/whatever, or Buddha...or even Allah, as long as you don't try to run planes into our buildings.) We're free to keep and bear arms, though some @$$-clown local yokels here and there think they can get away with denying us that right.
Because of you, we are secure in our papers & personal effects. We don't have to worry about troops taking over our houses for their headquarters.
Because of you, we are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law; the government has procedures they have to follow whenever they bring charges against us, and they cannot compel us to testify against ourselves. Because of you, juries determine our guilt or innocence, rather than judges who are unaccountable to the people.
Because of you, they can't demand prison time for running a red light, nor the death penalty for simple theft.
Because of you, we are governed by a Constitution, and have been for 2.3 centuries, and will be far into the future.
Mere words cannot express this country's apprciation for what you do, have done, and will continue to do from this point forward.
This, however, might be a good start: "Thank you".
Happy Veterans' Day 2004.
