PFW:  Oh, no - not another  crappy secondary...

Not a bad first Perfect Football Weekend, if I do say so myself:

I'm encouraged by the offensive line of the Cowboys, especially around the goal line.  And with Eddie George running the ball from inside the 5, our Red Zone offense should  be a lot better this year.

What discourages me is that the lack of heart that plagued Julius Jones throughout his Notre Dame career is starting to rear its ugly head here.  He tried to beg out of a series during the Tennessee game, and Bill Parcells chewed him out royally.  Then Parcells sat him down for the KC game.

Now, he's apparently running third string behind George and ReShard Lee.  This distraction is the last thing the Cowboys need going into the opener Sunday.

Uh, make the the next-to-last thing.  A right cornerback wouldn't hurt things any, especially one that can play Randy Moss halfway decently.  What we have there right now - Pete Hunter & Jameel Powell - ain't gonna cut it.  And don't be surprised if you see Mike Tice and Daunte Culpepper drooling on Sunday.

In Norman today, I imagine Bob Stoops is not the happiest camper in the world.  This should have been OU 77, BG 0.  Instead, BG got some confidence early, and hung with the Sooners the entire first half and part of the third quarter.

Right now, it's dueling defensive co-coordinators with Bo Pelini and some pud whose name I can't remember for the life of me.  Bobby, you need to get that situation under control before the TU game.

On to TCU.  Gary Patterson is taking responsibility for the poor (and I mean poor!!!) play of the secondary Thursday night.

Fine, I suppose.  But to me, the final score was TCU 48, Northwestern 24, the officiating 21.  The zebras personally accounted for 21 NU points.

People's Exhibit #1:  Third quarter, third and 8. NU's ball on its 15.  QB goes back to pass, hit as he throws...intercepted by TCU's Mark Walker and returned to the 5.

Except for one minor detail:  TCU was called for roughing the passer.  Massively bogus call, but it gave the ball back to NU, and they scored about six or seven plays later - one play after a bogus pass-interference penalty on the Frogs.

One of three pass-interference flags on the Froggies, I might add.  And all led to touchdowns immediately after.  Meanwhile, their secondary on our  receivers was reminiscent of the Pansies and the Colts in the AFC title game last year.  And called equally as horribly (we were getting literally mugged, no flags).

Memo to the Big Ten:  Specs for your zebras, mmmmmkay?

The TCU offense is good enough this year, although Tye Gunn is slow as molasses thanks to knee surgeries.  But the offensive line seems to be able to protect him enough so that he can direct the offense down the field fairly well.  Guess we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

We'll re-convene on Friday to see if we can make it two PFWs in a row.
