PFW: No more 'til next year

Well, the last opportunity for a Perfect Football Weekend died on the fake grass at Texas Stadium Thanksgiving afternoon. As it turns out, that venue was a bad place for any football team of mine this weekend:

Forney 21, Gainesville 24
TCU 20, SMU 13
Nebraska 31, Colorado 22
Dallas 21, Miami 40

The Cowgirls were back in Dave Campo-era form Thursday afternoon, getting stuffed by Miami's Bride-to-Be, Little Dicky Williams, the ex-Tsip. Mike Zimmer's defense gave him waaaaay  more respect than he deserved, and a career jouneyman backup (Jay Fiedler) made them pay. That combined with a once-again poor running attack, cost the Cowgirls the game. I'm convinced - Troy Hambrick is not the answer at running back. Time to cut our losses and turn him loose.

The Forney Jackrabbits also had their season end Friday on Jerry Jones' FieldTurf™. The new high-school plug-in didn't last very long. Forney gave up the game in the last half of the last quarter, blowing it big on special teams and defense. As perenially good as Forney is, they're starting to develop a reputation of choking in the big games. Not good.

TCU's win over Skip & Muffy University might as well have been a loss. The score was only 7-3 after one, 10-10 at half, and 13-13 after three. This should  have been a minimum 56-0 blowout. Only a 20-yard scamper by freshman Robert Merrill and a couple of timely penalties against "ShMU" enabled the Frogs to come away victors.

(Memo to Gary Patterson: First, hire an offensive coordinator. Second, Lonta Hobbs is not your answer at tailback. Make him the fullback blocking for Merrill. That's your man for the next three years. Ride that young boy's shoulders up the polls, because Hobbs is not going to do it for you.)

There's a conference call today between Conference USA and TCU over which bowl bid they're going to accept. If I were TCU athletic director Eric Hyman, I'd not accept any  bid. If this is the best they can do against a team that's not even good enough to play in Division I-AA, I don't want  to know how badly they'll stink up a bowl.

The Surprise of the Week comes from Boulder, Colorado. The Huskers trotted out a Sooper-Sekrit™ weapon Friday - the forward pass. It accounted for a touchdown, which proved to be a big part of the final margin.

And - as I had been hoping - the Colorado game was indeed Frank Solich's last as Husker coach. Thank God.

As this was the last regular-season weekend of college football, and all my high-school teams are out of the playoffs, this was the last opportunity this year for a PFW. We got about five of them this year, which isn't too shabby - considering that we hardly got any the last three years. (grin)

We'll crank this up again next September or so. We now return you to our regularly scheduled ranting, raving and Homorrhoid bashing...
