PFW: It's a tossup...

I like my odds for a PFW this weekend a little more than last, but it's still not a gimme.

My Arlington Heights Yellow Jackets play the North Side Steers tonight, and if there's ever a squash casserole in the making, it's here. North Side is flat-out horrible, and if Heights loses to these bozos, I'm calling for coach Duke Christian's head.

Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are at home for a Big XII showdown versus Texas A&M. This is a "double whammy" game for me, as Nebraska takes on the secondary role of being a team that opposes Coach Mercenary, Dennis Franchione. *spit*

TCU is at home in a Conference USA matchup against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Scary game, but the UAB offensive coordinator is former TCU head coach Pat Sullivan - and his offenses are typically (if his stay at TCU was any indication) less prolific than last year's Dallas Cowboys.

Speaking of which, they are on the road Sunday against Joey Harrington and the Detroit Lions. Detroit barely beat the 'Boys last year, but they're not all that much better this year, due to one of their key offensive players (Charles Rogers) being out with an injury. Meanwhile, the Cowboys bandwagon is beginning to roll. It may not be pretty, but I fully expect the Cowboys to handle Detroit with ease.

And with that, we put the blog on Cruise Control, load up the Grab Bag and set it on standby, and head out to do chores. Amazing how much easier it is to keep a place clean when 34-year-old doublewide bitches aren't around to perpetually mess things up... (snicker)

Yankees-Marlins: Baseball's annual yawnfest...

Well, the World Series is now set. The Yankees (or as Neil Boortz likes to call them, the YankMe's) defeated Pedro & the Red Sox yet again last night to win the American League pennant.

This means that the Florida Marlins, featuring former Texas Ranger catcher Pudge Rodriguez, will travel to the Bronx tomorrow to face the Bombers for the championship of Major League Baseball.

And I am one of millions of fans who won't  be watching.

See, it's bad enough that "Mafia Don" Fehr has held my enjoyment of baseball hostage now for the better part of 10 or 15 years or whatever. It's bad enough that to take a family of four out to a game nowadays, one nearly has to take out a second mortgage - or third.

I'm tired of George Steinbrenner purchasing (or attempting to purchase) world championships. I'm tired of Tom Hicks and the Texas Rangers' brain (HA!!!) trust letting players go, thinking they have insufficient talent or are on the downside of their careers - only to see said talent flourish and thrive in a new environment and actually win  something.

And besides, I'm a football/hockey guy anyway.

Now, if this Series would have had either the Chicago Cubs or the Boston Red Sox in it, I'd've been strongly inclined to watch at least one game. And had this thing had both  teams, I'd've watched every  frickin' game. Boston and Chicago, however, declined to cooperate.

So don't expect to see me tuned in to the boob tube during this Series.

And don't be surprised when I'm joined by a few million folks. The prediction from here is that this series will be the lowest rated in history, precisely because neither Boston nor the Cubbies are involved.

The downside of Chick Chasing™...

It wouldn't be a typical week without at least one plug for Chris Muir's Day By Day strip.

Today's strip is a hoot. This is my primary problem with Chick Chasing™.

Well, that and the fact that I'm perpetually broke, two things that seem to go hand-in-hand... :-)
